01 / The Layout Lab · A Little Room Edit tool
Before you move the furniture,
move the idea.
Build a simple room plan, arrange a few pieces, and see how they share the floor. Start with your own measurements or try an illustrative layout.
Drag a piece to move it. Select it to edit measurements. Arrow keys move a selected piece; hold Shift for finer moves.
Make your first plan
- Measure the usable width and depth of a rectangular room. Note recesses, heaters and fixed fittings separately.
- Set the room size. Add a few pieces and replace the example dimensions with your own.
- Move furniture to suit your routines. Keep routes, openings and important fittings in mind.
- Use the checks to spot overlapping footprints, pieces outside the room or furniture in the illustrative door zone.
- Save locally, export an editable plan file, or download an SVG sketch.
Read the numbers carefully
Furniture footprint is the combined area of the rectangular furniture shapes, with overlapping areas counted once. Rugs are excluded. “Uncovered floor” is the room area left after those footprints; it is not a measure of safe or comfortable circulation.
Rotating a piece swaps its horizontal and vertical footprint. Actual furniture is not always a perfect rectangle, and open drawers, reclining seats, pull-out beds and people need additional room.
What this sketch leaves out
The Lab models one rectangular room in two dimensions. It does not model height, ceiling slopes, structural walls, stairs, electrical points or required access routes. The door reference uses a simple square clearance zone. Verify the actual swing and all fixed obstacles in your home before moving or buying anything.
Keep a copy you control
“Save in browser” stores this plan on the current device and browser. Export the plan file to carry it into another browser; import only a plan you created or trust. The SVG download is a picture, while the JSON plan remains editable in the Lab.
Read the living room layout guide or consider a studio with separate zones.
